Equal-opportunity reviewers, we welcome a book on behalf of the continuum! It is for the mathematically eager who know some algebra. The first edition appeared anonymously in 1910 in England, and overall a million copies have been sold. In fact, most talk of continuum and its infinities is suppressed; the eye is nicely fixed on little bits of x, called dx, their differences and sums among all kinds of functions, their geometric meaning, and what they can do for you--a lot. Martin Gardner, himself an American mathematical landmark, says, "This is the leanest and liveliest introduction to calculus ever written," and, taken with his own present augmentation, three whole chapters and more, including infinite series and some neat problems, he is quite right. The times they are a-changing, and we admit we are not current in computer resources. Maybe "little bits of x" ought to--or have been--placed on the screen in a serious pedagogic structure that students can manipulate. Graphics programs that share the scope and spirit of Thompson/Gardner would make a valued complement to their paper-and-pencil book. “Calculus Made Easy is arguably the best math teaching ever. To a non-mathematician, its simplicity and clarity reveals the mathematical genius of Newton, Leibniz, and Thompson himself. Martin Gardner deserves huge thanks for renewing this great book.” ―Julian Simon, author of Population Matters“A remarkable and user-friendly approach to the study of calculus, made even more so by Martin Gardner, the most highly acclaimed mathematical expositor of our time.” ―R.L. Graham, Chief Scientist, AT&T Labs, and author of Concrete Mathematics

Calculus Made Easy has long been the most popular calculus primer, and this major revision of the classic math text makes the subject at hand still more comprehensible to readers of all levels. With a new introduction, three new chapters, modernized language and methods throughout, and an appendix of challenging and enjoyable practice problems, Calculus Made Easy has been thoroughly updated for the modern reader.

Avoid Junk Paperback version(Johnston Press), get good Hardcover (St. Martins Press) instead This review applies only to the Johnston Press version. I have never seen math printed so poorly in my life. Equations and symbols were regularly printed more clearly and neatly in the 18th century than they are in this printing. In several instances there are the tell-tale stub symbols where the conversion to the appropriate printed symbol was obviously not made, and so the reader is left to wonder what greek letter or other symbol had been intended where the little square with the dot in the middle appears in-line and within equations. There's just no excuse for such sloppy publishing. The hardcover version by St. Matins Press is what you want. It's also almost half the price!, and is updated to include a somewhat useful introduction and very useful footnotes by a contemporary mathematician. That is an excellent book at an excellent price. After dropping out of college 14 years ago, over ... After dropping out of college 14 years ago, over calculus, I finally learned calculus. This book would have changed my life path 15 years ago.Solid book This is a solid book meant to teach you the basics of Calculus and hopefully leave you with better understanding than you had before it. It starts out by defining some things that are absolutely critical in understanding in higher mathematics, such as, What is a function?, if you wish to do well in higher mathematics then you must understand the concept of a function quite well. The book is written in somewhat informal language to make you feel more comfortable, which I think is good for everyone, because if you can't explain something simply then either you don't understand it or you have horrible communication skills, either way, you need to improve.Though this book does a great job at teaching calculus in a down-to-earth sort of way, it may be too much for you still if you aren't competent in algebra and basic trigonometry. So I would recommend brushing up on those two things before really hitting this book hard. Whenever you find a concept difficult, look up alternative explanations to see if they help (for example khanacademy videos help many people), you still are having difficulty with something after working through other explanations, then you must analyze yourself in conjunction with the problem to pinpoint exactly what is preventing you from understanding it, then master that point and come back to the original with better understanding. Also sometimes it just takes time for new concepts to sink-in (for your brain to process and organize them in relation to already known things). If you don't know how to read analytically, then you must learn, because that is important to teaching yourself things. One book I would recommend highly concerning reading skills is "How to read a book" by Mortimer A. Adler. It walks you through the various stages of reading. Another tool that you can use to improve your reading skills, which are critical in learning anything including mathematics, is the sq3r or psq5r method. You can google these for a better explanation but they stand for this: sq3r, skim/survey, question, read, recite, review, and psq5r, purpose, survey, question, read-selectively, recite, reduce/record, reflect, review. You can google those for a more complete understanding of them and how to apply them to your reading, but know this, if you want to be able to teach yourself anything, then you must improve your reading skills. Reading for understanding and reading for pleasure or entertainment are completely different task.Forgive my clumsy writing, but I learnt to read later than normal because the school system failed me and I had to teach myself, which is why I know the difference between reading for entertainment and reading for understanding, these types of reading must be approached differently. My writing skills have a long way to go, but I'm more focused on mathematics and general knowledge right now. Oh, I just remembered another book that is really helpful in problem sovling "How to solve it" by George Polya, I highly recommend that book for general problem solving strategies esp. for mathematics. So, if you want to be able to teach yourself things as well as possible then buy these two books:How to read a bookHow to solve itFind useful resources like Khanacademy and forums concerning your issue and ask questionsThink and work through the problem, if you get stuck, then analyze it and isolate the thing that is causing you trouble, research that thing and practice it until you feel confident then come back to the original problem.Questions you can ask yourself when you get stuck are:Do I really understand the problem?Which part of the problem is causing me trouble? Is there a problem from my past that is similar in part or whole that can help me with this one? What do I know about the problem? What is/are the unknown/sCan I break the problem down into a series of simpler problems that I can solve? Those are some general questions you could ask yourself while trying to solve problems, you will learn those type of questions in "How to solve it". As Francis Bacon said "A prudent question is one half of wisdom". Asking questions is very important in the learning process and asking the right questions even more so, it forces you to think deeper and reading more actively. Good luck to all.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Download

ISBN: B0192CTMUU
Title: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Pdf

"'There will be three tasks, spaced throughout the school year, and they will test the champions in many different ways … their magical prowess - their daring - their powers of deduction - and, of course, their ability to cope with danger.'"

The Triwizard Tournament is to be held at Hogwarts. Only wizards who are over seventeen are allowed to enter - but that doesn't stop Harry dreaming that he will win the competition. Then at Hallowe'en, when the Goblet of Fire makes its selection, Harry is amazed to find his name is one of those that the magical cup picks out. He will face death-defying tasks, dragons and Dark wizards, but with the help of his best friends, Ron and Hermione, he might just make it through - alive!

Missing Pages as some were Double Printed I LOVE THE STORY. Illustrations are great. PROBLEM is that the book came missing pages 153-168 because 137-152 were printed twice. It took me a week to realize this. You will want to check your books. I'm sure Amazon will take care of me but thank goodness I wasn't gifting this.Beautiful editions for fans & children These illustrated editions of Harry Potter were done right! All of the original text is there and the artwork is beautiful. Every page has something, whether it's an illustration that takes up a full double page spread, a little drawing in the corner, a thematic border, or just a visually textured background. It may sound chaotic, like the visuals could be too much and break up the flow of reading but it is not; it enhances the story as you turn the pages and delight in the new visuals that each page brings. I imagine these would be a great way to bring children into the story, but they're so nice you may want to protect and collect these beauties. I can't wait for them to release the others.Beautiful Book but mine's already falling apart ;-( The book itself and illustrations are absolutely, incredibly extraordinary. In that way, this is 100% a 10-STAR book and is absolutely to die for for Harry Potter fans. I was ravenous to get my hands on my copy as soon as it was delivered this morning, but was quickly disappointed.First, Amazon's packaging was utterly and despicably inadequate. (See Photo) My book was shipped in a box, with *no packing material* of any kind. At first glance, it seemed OK. But when I took a close look at my dust jacket, I was extremely upset to find that the gold foil lettering for "Harry Potter" had been rubbed away and destroyed completely in some places leaving ugly, black matte in its place-- pock marking the otherwise handsome gold lettering. Also, the matte-finish of the dust jacket had been rubbed so badly due to the bad packaging that it left scars and shiny markings where the matte finish was worn off. For an obvious gift/collectors item, this is absolutely unacceptable. I called Amazon and they didn't seem to "get" what my fuss was all about and just offered to ship a replacement which, undoubtedly, will be shipped in exactly the same way.Second, after I got over my initial outrage over the shipping/packaging. I sat down to enjoy the actual book itself, which as I said is absolutely extraordinary! I was extremely cautious handling the book and binding, being unsure how tolerant the binding is of weight. I carefully opened both the right and left sides of the binding and supported the weight of the opened cover using a small pillow. By the time I reached the back 3/4th of the book (on Professor McGonagall's full page illustration) the binding separated from the spine the very first time I turned the page. In other words, the binding fell apart during my very first pass through the book. (See Photo). Another thing that really drove me crazy was the way that the stitched in book mark was carelessly folded into the book. It left dents all over my pages (See Photo), which of course had to be on a full page illustration of Hagrid!Needless to say I'm in awe how Bloomsbury has managed to put together such an incredible project, with JK Rowling's remarkable literature and Jim Kay's otherworldly illustrations-- and allowed it to be put together in a low quality binding! I noticed that all of the previous Harry Potter books were printed and bound in USA (some in Mexico) but this book was printed and bound in China. I would like to hope that they would quality check a thing like this, but perhaps not. Either way, I am extremely disappointed in the quality/binding of my book. I would be interested to know if others are seeing the same thing. And please, Amazon, pack these books in bubble wrap and packing material! Not all alone in a box...Update (October 9th): I have finally received my new book and it was in much, much better condition. The cover and spine were tight, intact and falling apart from the binding like my original copy. Addtl photos to follow...
