It is New Year’s Eve, nearly six weeks into an off-and-on blizzard that has locked Alaska down, effectively cutting it off from the outside world. But now there are reports of a plane down in the Quilak mountains. With the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board—responsible for investigating aviation incidents) unable to reach the crash site, ex-Trooper Jim Chopin is pulled out of retirement to try to identify the aircraft, collect the corpses, and determine why no flight has been reported missing. But Jim discovers survivors: two children who don’t speak a word of English. Meanwhile, PI Kate Shugak receives an unexpected and unwelcome accusation from beyond the grave, a charge that could change the face of the Park forever.

The Giver of Stars Pdf

ISBN: B07NKP3JL4
Title: The Giver of Stars Pdf A Novel
“With characters so real they feel like dear friends and a compelling storyline, this is a beautiful, special novel. I loved it and didn’t want it to end!”
—Liane Moriarty, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Big Little Lies

“A captivating tale of love, friendship, and self-actualization.”
—People

Set in Depression-era America, a breathtaking story of five extraordinary women and their remarkable journey through the mountains of Kentucky and beyond, from the author of Me Before You

Alice Wright marries handsome American Bennett Van Cleve hoping to escape her stifling life in England.  But small-town Kentucky quickly proves equally claustrophobic, especially living alongside her overbearing father-in-law. So when a call goes out for a team of women to deliver books as part of Eleanor Roosevelt’s new traveling library, Alice signs on enthusiastically.

The leader, and soon Alice's greatest ally, is Margery, a smart-talking, self-sufficient woman who's never asked a man's permission for anything. They will be joined by three other singular women who become known as the Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky.

What happens to them--and to the men they love--becomes an unforgettable drama of loyalty, justice, humanity and passion. These heroic women refuse to be cowed by men or by convention. And though they face all kinds of dangers in a landscape that is at times breathtakingly beautiful, at others brutal, they’re committed to their job: bringing books to people who have never had any, arming them with facts that will change their lives.

Based on a true story rooted in America’s past, The Giver of Stars is unparalleled in its scope and epic in its storytelling. Funny, heartbreaking, enthralling, it is destined to become a modern classic--a richly rewarding novel of women’s friendship, of true love, and of what happens when we reach beyond our grasp for the great beyond.

SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE!

Lots of STARS for The Giver of Stars What makes a great story? Well-developed characters that you want to know more and more about, story-writing that makes you laugh in parts, and cry in others, a well-developed story line with a problem you just want to skip to the end to find out what happens but you don't because you don't want to miss anything, a sprinkle or two of romance, and an ending that leaves a smile on your face. The Giver of Stars has all that and more in this historical fiction novel. (I'm stingy with my 5-star ratings. I am giving this 4.5 stars only because I felt the story start to drag a tiny bit, but I think that was just my anxiousness at wanting the "big problem" to be resolved). Well done, Jojo Moyes!Mesmerizing A delightful story, with authentic voices and lifestyles of eastern Kentucky during the thirties. And I bet if one rode up into the hills and deep dark corners of Kentucky and West Virginia today, one could still find people and cabins described in this tale. A fine tribute to books, librarians, and to the joy of reading. The history of the moving library I like Jojo Moyes. This book was special in many ways. First, the history of how these women, during the depression, carried library books on horseback in all kinds of weather to the backwoods of Kentucky, was inspiring and unknown to many of us. The joy that it gave to families in hard times was enormous. Maybe it is time to do this again? And her characters were varied and well developed. A good read! Could not put it down and read it in one day.

The Girl in the Photograph Download

ISBN: 1250173647
Title: The Girl in the Photograph Pdf The True Story of a Native American Child, Lost and Found in America
Author: Byron L. Dorgan
Published Date: 2019-11-26
Page: 192

"As he tells the harrowing, yet inspiring story of one young Native American girl, Senator Dorgan describes the nearly two centuries of shameful treatment of American Indians, much of which continues today."―Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell, Council of Chiefs, Northern Cheyenne Indian Tribe “Please read this book! The Girl in the Photograph is one of the most important civil rights books written in this century. It examines, in full detail, through the life of one young woman, the horrific conditions in which many Native American children live in a country that once belonged to their ancestors. Once you recover from your shock, the author gives you an opportunity to participate in the change that will restore opportunity and justice to the precious children of our first Americans.”―Senator Heidi Heitkamp “Byron Dorgan has written an important book, with compassion and understanding about the struggle of a courageous Native American girl and her people. It is a poignant story describing the challenging life of a young Native American child who, against all odds, is a survivor.”―Walter Isaacson, New York Times bestselling author"This book is a poignant, tough and brutally honest story about a Native American girl named Tamara and the conditions that confront too many children on Indian reservations. It is a story of survival, and it also tells the inspiring stories of youth helping bring change to the reservations."―Anita Fineday, Former Chief Judge, White Earth Tribal Nation"[A] poignant account...Dorgan's plea for change serves as an informative and moving introduction to a great injustice." ―Publishers WeeklyBYRON L. DORGAN served as a U.S. congressman and senator for North Dakota for thirty years before retiring in January 2011. He was chairman of Senate Committees and Subcommittees on the issues of Energy, Aviation, Appropriations, Water Policy, and Indian Affairs. Senator Dorgan is the author of the New York Times bestseller Take This Job and Ship It. When he retired from the U.S. Senate, he created the Center for Native American Youth (CNAY) to work on teen suicide prevention, education opportunity and more for children living on Indian reservations.

Through the story of Tamara, an abused Native American child, North Dakota Senator Byron Dorgan describes the plight of many children living on reservations―and offers hope for the future.

On a winter morning in 1990, U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan of North Dakota picked up the Bismarck Tribune. On the front page, a small Native American girl gazed into the distance, shedding a tear. The headline: "Foster home children beaten―and nobody's helping."

Dorgan, who had been working with American Indian tribes to secure resources, was upset. He flew to the Standing Rock Indian Reservation to meet with five-year-old Tamara who had suffered a horrible beating at a foster home. He visited with Tamara and her grandfather and they became friends. Then Tamara disappeared. And he would search for her for decades until they finally found each other again.

This book is her story, from childhood to the present, but it's also the story of a people and a nation. More than one in three American Indian/Alaskan Native children live in poverty. AI/AN children are disproportionately in foster care and awaiting adoption. Suicide among AI/AN youth ages 15 to 24 is 2.5 times the national rate. How has America allowed this to happen?

As distressing a situation as it is, this is also a story of hope and resilience. Dorgan, who founded the Center for Native American Youth (CNAY) at the Aspen Institute, has worked tirelessly to bring Native youth voices to the forefront of policy discussions, engage Native youth in leadership and advocacy, and secure and share resources for Native youth. You will fall in love with this heartbreaking story, but end the book knowing what can be done and what you can do.

Compelling & Interesting Picked this up after seeing the AP article about the book. It doesnt disappoint as it dives into and delivers compelling stories about Tamara and Native American women/youth. Really changes perspectives on my day to day lifeThe book isn't about the girl in the photograph! I was eager to read this book & hear all about her story. Unfortunately, this book spends about 20 pages on the girl in the photograph, Tamara, and the rest is native American high school graduation rates, percentages of native Americans living in poverty, native American kids in foster care rates... It's an eye opener if you didn't know that the US hasn't delivered on treaties we signed hundreds of years ago. The whole book sounds like a Ted Talk on the struggle of native American children living on a reservation. And guess what? **Spoiler** Tamara is now in her early 30's & doesn't remember anything that happened to her!! You do not get the story of the girl in the photograph!somewhat disappointed Although I found this book to be interesting and informative when it comes to the lives and plight of the Native American Indians, I was also disappointed. I would have liked a lot more time being spent on Tamara as the blurb led me to believe I would be reading about.

National Geographic The Photo Ark Download

ISBN: 1426217773
Title: National Geographic The Photo Ark Pdf One Man's Quest to Document the World's Animals
Author: Joel Sartore
Published Date: 2017
Page: 400

“This is one of the most scientifically important—and artistically brilliant—books ever.  I don’t know of any other book that has such power. You cannot see these sensitive portraits of the diversity of animals living on Planet Earth and not be entranced. And moved. And inspired to do all you can to ensure they stay with us. Joel Sartore is an ambassador extraordinaire for the beleaguered animals of our planet and should receive a Nobel Prize. No one can look at these sensitive portraits of the incredible animal beings and not be amazed and inspired to do all in our power to preserve them—all of them, all the complex tapestry of life—for our children and theirs. I can think of no other book with such a compelling message: We must each do all that we can to preserve these incredible beings—all of them.  And we must act now, or it will be too late for most of them.”—Jane Goodall   “Joel Sartore’s The Photo Ark is a magnificent, awe-inspiring, encyclopedic, and forward-looking book. It surely will be game-changer for getting people to connect or to reconnect with other animals and the various landscapes that serve as their homes—to ‘rewild’ their heart—and to become deeply re-enchanted with the remarkable, fascinating, and diverse beings with whom we share our wondrous planet. I shall share it widely with a broad audience, including youngsters, who are the ambassadors for our and other animals’ future. I hope this spectacular work of art enjoys a global audience, and I honestly don't see how it won’t. It is that good.”—Marc Bekoff   “We owe it to these animals, as they struggle for survival on a human-dominated planet, to look them in the eye. Joel Sartore’s awestruck and awe-inspiring photos make that an experience of deep heart and beauty.”—David Quammen“We love them. We are exterminating them. We have no idea most of them even exist. Every painting of Noah’s Ark shows those familiar few animals we all agree seem worthy of salvation. Elephants, giraffes...but every one of them—and most others on Earth—are in fact in mortal danger now. Their flood is us. Yet when expecting new human life we paint animals on our nursery walls. We don’t paint computers or work cubicles. We paint animals, our subconscious, hope-filled wish to greet our unborn child by saying, ‘Welcome into this life-filled world. We are not alone. We have wondrous company.’ It’s time we met those splendid souls with whom we are failing to share our planet, whom we are annihilating. Joel Sartore’s stunning images are powerful enough to make us all ask and answer the question: ‘What will I do?’”  — Carl Safina, author of Beyond Words; What Animals Think and Feel JOEL SARTORE is a photographer, speaker, author, teacher, and a 25-year contributor to National Geographic magazine as well as Audubon, Geo, Time, Life, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated. He has written several books including National Geographic's Rare: Portraits of America's Endangered Species, Photographing Your Family, and Let's Be Reasonable, a collection of essays from the CBS Sunday Morning show. Sartore and his work have been the subjects of several national broadcasts, including the National Geographic Channel's Explorer, the NBC Nightly News, NPR's Weekend Edition, and an hour-long PBS documentary, At Close Range. He is also a contributor on the CBS Sunday Morning Show with Charles Osgood. HARRISON FORD is an American actor and film producer. He gained worldwide fame for his starring roles as Han Solo in the original Star Wars epic space opera trilogy and the title character of the Indiana Jones film series. DOUGLAS CHADWICK has reported on wildlife around the world, from right whales in the subantarctic to snow leopards in the Himalayas, producing close to 50 articles for National Geographic magazine. He has written 13 books about wildlife and conservation, including several focused on the Rocky Mountains.

The lush and unique photography in this book represents National Geographic's Photo Ark, a major initiative and lifelong project by photographer Joel Sartore to make portraits of the world's animals—especially those that are endangered. His powerful message, conveyed with humor, compassion, and art: to know these animals is to save them.

Sartore is circling the globe, visiting zoos and wildlife rescue centers to create studio portraits of 12,000 species, with an emphasis on those facing extinction. Wiht a goal of photographing every animal in captivity in the world, he has photographed more than 6,000 already and now, thanks to a multi-year partnership with National Geographic, he may reach his goal. This book showcases his animal portraits: from tiny to mammoth, from the Florida grasshopper sparrow to the greater one-horned rhinoceros. Paired with the eloquent prose of veteran wildlife writer Douglas Chadwick, and an inspiring foreword from Harrison Ford, this book presents a thought-provoking argument for saving all the species of our planet.

A time capsule of great importance..... The Photo Ark arrived today from Amazon. After reading some of the reviews before which stated the printing quality was lacking resolution or detail ,I was concerned that the resolution quality would be lacking in fine detail or that the photos would be blurry, but the images seemed sharp to me. They were beautiful and the details amazing. I am an artist and took photography so I think I have an eye for such things, and it seemed fine to me. I am so glad I purchased this book to support such a beautiful project . It's so voluminous with so many creatures represented, it really is like Noah's Ark. What an inspired labor of love! I cried when I was looking at all the animals and thinking how amazing and beautiful they are and to think we humans are endangering them . As other reviewers stated, every family or classroom should have a copy. There are so many color plates in this book that I am amazed at the price for the quality. For folks who wanted better paper or better printing, the book would cost $100.00! The quality is beautiful and I am glad National Geographic published and produced it the way they did so it could find it's way into more hands and hearts.Beautiful and meaningful This is an amazing and life changing book. For anyone who treasures our community of living beings on Earth, this book will delight you. It reinforces the connection we have with other species and does so with the most magnificent photographs one can imagine. It will always be by my side. How wonderful.... ...It was for me to watch Joel on a PBS special working on this book, while with my parents at their cabin. As soon as I got home I looked for this book. I ordered one for my home to share with family and friends. I also ordered a second copy for my parent's that sits on their cabin coffee table and has been enjoyed by them and many visitors. Excellent purchase and quality...quick delivery...so happy!!!!!

Great Cards for any child! Pros:- Large print for easy reading- Colorful pictures- 100 cards = 200 wordsCons:- I just wish that they were a bit sturdier.Visual Cues My grandson always mixed up the same sets of two words; he had learned to rely on the pictures on the cards instead of looking at the actual words on them. I'll be ordering sight word cards that have no additional visual cues other than the words on them. This set also leaves out some very important beginner sight words, as well as including several that aren't sight words at all; they can be figured out using phonics.Nice cards Purchased these cards for my 5 year old to learn his sight words. Love how they are located on both sides for more use and practice
